About The Play Therapist
JANE SEYMOUR – Principal Play Therapist
Jane Seymour is a clinical psychologist with a broad background working with children and families over many years. This includes working within educational settings and community agencies, although her best career move remains being a parent to three now grown children. Jane has been in private practice in Canberra since 2014, developing her child-centred play therapy practice over this time. She is now the proud owner of Play Therapy ACT, opening the doors in May 2017.
Jane received Advanced Clinical Training in Play Therapy through Play Therapy Australia. This is a year long 100 hour training with ongoing supervision and professional development that is required for practice. Jane’s supervisor is Dr. William Nordling, Clinical Psychologist who is based in Arlington, Virginia USA. Bill is well-known world-wide for his work and contribution to developing the Child Centred Play Therapy modality. He has published widely in this area. Jane continues to receive regular supervision with Dr. Nordling and Donna Berry at Play Therapy Australia to ensure she delivers best practice standards in her play therapy approach providing psychotherapy for children.
While her work with play therapy remains her focus, Jane also works with children and adolescents using a range of techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness. This depends on the child and the issues the child presents with and their age. Jane is happy to discuss this with you at intake.
Jane has strong experience working with a range of developmental issues in childhood. She is respected in the Canberra community for her work with children on the Autism Spectrum and working with children with significant behavioural and emotional issues. Jane prefers to work with all those involved with the child’s care, in a multi-disciplinary approach. Jane also offers Griffiths Assessments for children 0-6 years, and uses a range of screening tools to assess any pervasive issues.
Jane is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and is an Australian Play Therapists Association Registered Play Therapist. Jane is also a Clinical Member of Australian Play Therapists Association, and is able to provide supervision to play therapists in training and those working towards their full membership with APTA.
