Play Therapy and Clinical Psychologist Canberra
Welcome to Play Therapy ACT
What Do We Do?
We provide therapeutic counselling, psychological services and support to children, adolescents and families, in Canberra ACT.
We also provide parenting education and programmes to support important family relationships. This is an holistic service, understanding that emotional and behavioural challenges occur within a family and social context. We aim to assist the child and support the environment around them.
We offer a range of psychological and therapeutic services. Our principal play therapist, Jane Seymour, is a clinical psychologist with broad experience working with children and families.
What is Play Therapy?
The therapeutic approach is a specific technique – Child-Centred Play Therapy. It is a gentle, but powerful process for the child to explore their issues in a safe and trusting environment. The child is not under pressure to talk through difficulties, but he or she is invited to use play, a natural medium of communication, to work through emotional, behavioural and relational issues. It encourages children to explore and resolve their difficulties, developing positive coping strategies.
This approach is most appropriate for children aged 2 to 12 years. We offer weekly sessions at our rooms in Kingston, close to shops and cafes.
Why Play Therapy?
The play therapy approach we use at Play Therapy ACT assists children presenting with different issues including, for example:
- Difficulty with emotion regulation, such as angry outbursts and meltdowns
- Grief and loss
- Adjusting to life events, for example – relocation, family separation, or illness
- Attachment difficulties
- Anxiety and Phobias
- Low self-esteem and lack of confidence
- Difficulties with social development
- Shyness/ introversion
- Poor verbal communication skills or language delay
- Intellectual disability
Working with the Family
At Play Therapy ACT, we work with the whole family, and where appropriate, the school and other services. A multi-disciplinary approach is important to us, particularly where a range of therapies and medical interventions are being provided for your child.
We recognise the importance of strengthening the family dynamics so that the child is not considered the problem, but part of a broader picture that requires support. Here at Play Therapy ACT, we offer ongoing consultations with the parents and strategies to support.
Child and Parent Relationship Training
This programme is run for parents, using the play technique in their own home, as a sustainable and workable strategy that supports the parenting over time. The parents who are attending are gaining new skills to work with their children at home. Parents are learning about tuning into their child’s emotional world and to reflect what they see, to validate their child’s emotional experience. They are
learning wonderful skills in co-regulation, limit-setting, and at the same time,
building on the powerful parent and child bonds.
